The Learning Journey

The introduction of eLearning has forever changed the training landscape, shifting our learning from tedious textbook styles to interactive, bespoke digital experiences. Its role in business shows no signs of slowing down, with an estimated market value of $1 trillion by 2023. So, as eLearning continues to evolve through technological advancements, we are going to explore its growth journey so far.

THE GREY LINE – BACK TO THE BASICS

Taking it back to the 1960s, the world knew nothing but paper-bound learning. There was no luxury of a Google search bar, but simply a library and a good textbook. So, the launch of the first digital learning system, Computer Based Training (CBT), was no doubt a breakthrough moment. At its core, CBT established the shift from printed to digital content. Whilst this innovative system enabled a new world of learning, its one-way communication method is far from what we would consider practical today, running on a one size fits all approach. This is where we embark on ‘The Grey Line’, a long and slow eLearning journey encountering tiresome delays.

Fast forward nearly 40 years to 1999, the term eLearning was born, one year on from the invention of Google (yes, younger than Google). At this time, PowerPoint and Word were the ‘go-to’ creative tools. However, despite their many uses, there lies here a common trap for many eLearning creators. An overload of content heavy documents full of text, text, and more text. ‘Death by PowerPoint’ we call it at Electra. Feeling inspired yet?
