Blaise Gohla – My Electra Learning Internship Journey

My Electra Learning Internship Journey: Growth, Insight, and Inspiration

As an MSc Digital Marketing student at RGU (Robert Gordon University), I recently had the opportunity to spend four transformative weeks interning at Electra Learning. From on-site sessions at the Aberdeen office every Monday to working remotely throughout the week, this internship not only allowed me to apply the knowledge gained in the classroom but also revealed the dynamic processes that drive a successful business.

A Day in the Life: Blending Classroom Knowledge with Real-World Experience

From the very beginning, the structure of the internship was impressive. Each Monday, I reported to the Electra Learning office, where the energy and collaborative spirit of the team were palpable. Under the guidance of Managing Director Beth Milne and Marketing Coordinator Gelis Mullen, I was welcomed into a culture that was as supportive as it was innovative. Their open-door policy ensured that I always had the resources and guidance needed to excel in my tasks.

Over the following days, working remotely, I found that the alignment between the team’s digital approach and Electra Learning’s brand values (teamwork, quality, and passion) was consistently apparent. This allowed for seamless communication and a sense of belonging, even when I was away from the physical office. Weekly marketing meetings with Beth, Gelis and Austin McKenzie added another layer of learning, as these sessions were not only informative but also interactive, with team members sharing insights and brainstorming creative solutions.

Key Learning Moments: From Web Audits to Behind-the-Scenes Video Production

One of the standout moments of my internship was the opportunity to undertake a web audit for the Electra Learning website. This task was both challenging and exciting because it provided a practical application of the theories and practices I had studied. Analyzing the site from both a user experience and a technical standpoint, I was able to recommend improvements that could enhance digital engagement. It was immensely satisfying to see the direct connection between academic learning and the tangible requirements of a working team.

The experience was further enriched by the behind-the-scenes glimpse into the creative process at Electra Learning. I had the privilege of observing senior learning designers like Ron Gordon and John Burgoyne as they walked me through their process of creating dynamic e-learning visuals. Whether it was understanding how client reviews directly informed the design of products or watching Stuart bring creative flair to learning materials, I was able to see firsthand the meticulous care that goes into every project.

The highlight of my final week was assisting with video production for campaigns featuring Finance Manager Elaine Donaldson and Beth. Electra’s Photography Guidelines emphasize authenticity, and seeing this in action was inspiring. The setup was candid, the lighting bright, and the team’s focus on genuine storytelling reinforced their Passion for relatable, impactful communication.

Cultivating a Supportive, Collaborative Environment

What truly set this internship apart was the company culture at Electra Learning. The regular and personalized communication from Beth and Gelis ensured that I always felt supported. Their willingness to provide guidance and offer opportunities for learning made a significant difference. In a dynamic and fast-paced environment, such kindness and professionalism fostered both a positive work ethic and a genuine enthusiasm for the projects at hand.

Electra Learning’s welcoming and friendly atmosphere is clearly reflected in their brand, an identity built on passion, teamwork, and a dedication to quality. This is perhaps why they have earned accolades such as being featured as one of the best places to work on the Sunday Times 2024 list. Experiencing these values in action was both inspiring and motivational, reaffirming my career aspirations in digital marketing.

Reflecting on the Impact of My Internship

Looking back on these four weeks, I realize how fortunate I was to immerse myself in an environment that encourages constant learning and personal growth. The blend of practical tasks, from conducting a detailed web audit to engaging with creative teams and participating in media production—allowed me to gain hands-on experience that will undoubtedly serve me well in my future endeavors.

By working directly with experienced professionals in a supportive setting, I not only honed my technical skills but also developed an appreciation for the strategic thinking and collaborative spirit that drive successful businesses. It is this confluence of learning and application that defines the Electra Learning experience.

Final Thoughts

My time at Electra Learning was a robust learning journey, combining academic insights with real-world application in an environment that truly nurtures talent. The exposure to diverse aspects of digital marketing, from strategy meetings to creative production has been invaluable. As I continue my studies and look forward to building a career, this experience will remain a cornerstone of my professional development.
